Musquetteers and Maidens
Cannons
roar belching flames ten feet, thick plumes of smoke rise through the air.
Matchlock, wheellock, doglock musquettets and pistols flood more acrid smoke
onto the field. Then voices cries “Vivat Ferdandus!” followed by “Vivat
Polonia”, one side rushes forward to meet the other, they shout “Volnitsa”. The opposing sides meet in
a crash of steel, rapier, saber and sword ring out. The fight is harshly
realistic in nature, steel meets flesh, a shirt is slashed here, a dagger drops
to the ground there, before an opponent cries piteously for mercy, only to have
a saber slash across his bared chest. This
is all just another weekend the members of Musquetteers and Maidens.
The group was formed six years ago in Hot Springs, AR, by a few friends. The group now boasts dozens of active
members in several states. Due to their growth and diversified interests, they
have now formed member groups under the umbrella organization. These include
Walter Buttler’s Dragoons, Kosaky, Regiment d’Hebron, and Prince Zu Mannheim’s
Light Artillery.
Musquetteers
and Maidens re-create The Thirty Years War and the wars of the mid 17th
century including the Polish Swedish wars, the Kozak wars, and the Dutch
Spanish war of rebellion, to name a few.
All
the troops enjoy much song and dance with the “ladies” of the train when we are
not training in the arts of war. They often meet for feasts, games of chance,
and other delights of the period. The group is a unique living history
organization dedicated to bringing their period of to life. Their authenticity
is remarkable. Not only are the clothes, tents, camp utensils, armor, firearms,
and even the six cannon as correct as is possible, but they speak the languages
of the soldiers of the period.
The sword work taught and practiced is generally
known as live blade. That is, the swords used are authentic weapons of the
period, not fencing equipment. This evolves extensive training and
consummate skill. All of their sword fights are un-scripted so that when you see
someone win a fight they really WON the fight! This brings a vivid reality to
their duels and battles. The group has appeared at renaissance faires and
history days in New Jersey, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
